Beginning a new year typically consists of reflection on the past, gratitude for what we’ve achieved, anticipation of the future, and the long (or short!) list of intentions that are the launching pad for our vision of the year to come. During 2016, I was both honored and humbled to work with many organizations and individuals who exemplify excellence, tenacity, service, and enthusiasm for their chosen professions. While the groups were varied and their visions diverse, each gathering presented opportunities for shared knowledge, collaboration, problem-solving, and growth. Organizations such as the Arkansas Department of Workforce Services, the Tennessee Teen Institute, Country View Calves, TOPS, the National Association for Health Care Recruitment, Intrepid Management, Arkansas Area Agencies on Aging, the Food Marketing Institute, and many school districts and colleges challenged their team members to step up and stand out, providing inspiration for one another and for me! Though this list is a brief representation of the many groups I had the honor of working with in 2016, it is a sampling of the heartbeat of our country and the individuals who make it great. I am grateful to each and every person I encountered and thank you for allowing me to work with you. What a wonderful year it was. Now, let's all go out and #make2017count!

The Student and Youth Travel Association (SYTA) is a non-profit, professional trade association that promotes student and youth travel, and seeks to foster integrity and professionalism among student and youth travel service providers. "The Voice of Student and Youth Travel®," SYTA is a dynamic partnership of dedicated professionals passionate in promoting and providing travel experiences for student and youth which enhance their social, cultural, and educational growth. SYTA is acknowledged as the authority on student travel, and its members are recognized for providing the highest quality experiences for young voyagers. It was a pleasure learning more about the vision of this exciting group of professionals while preparing to speak during their annual conference in Orlando. I hope to have the opportunity to work with SYTA again down the road! What an outstanding group of talented minds.

I always enjoy traveling to New England…the scenery never disappoints and the people are delightful! Having the opportunity to present the keynote during the third annual State of Connecticut Department of Administrative Services Procurement Training was an honor. This invaluable event gathered nearly 200 fiscal and purchasing staff from various Connecticut state agencies for networking, training, and information exchange. Why are these trainings so critical? Without these hardworking individuals, the services we take for granted on a daily basis would be in jeopardy.

Have you ever considered who comprises the gears and fuels a state’s infrastructure? Departments such as this one work tirelessly in the background, providing organization and traction to ensure our needs are met. To all the dedicated Connecticut public servants, I offer my heartfelt thanks for your hospitality and engagement and wish you much success as you continue “Moving to the Future!"

Recently, I had the distinct privilege of working with the Arkansas Division of Services for the Blind during their Statewide Meeting. What an extraordinary group of individuals they are, living their lives serving others less advantaged. I am better for having met such wonderful people!

The Division of Services for the Blind is dedicated to the independence of Arkansans who are blind or visually impaired and committed to the principle that these individuals have the right to make informed choices regarding where they live, where they work, how they participate in the community, and how they interact with others. Their mission is to work in partnership with these Arkansans of all ages by assisting them in obtaining information and providing access to services that increase their opportunities to live as they choose. The Division’s goals include rehabilitation teaching, prevention of blindness, and securing or maintaining employment consistent with each individual’s skills, abilities, and interests. If you know someone who can benefit from this valuable assistance, contact the Division today.

Various situations occur when we are all asked to stand and speak. Regardless of the reason, environment, or subject matter, public speaking can generate a sizeable amount of fear. Are there proven strategies that can ease the pain? You bet. When used with confidence, the following ideas work: 1. Employ an expressive voice. 2. Build audience rapport with your eyes. 3. Share relatable and impactful stories. 4. Utilize pacing, breathing, and pausing throughout. 5. Prepare and practice with a positive outcome in mind.

Three out of four individuals experience some type of anxiety when it comes to speaking in public. So, if you can relate to this statistic, know that you’re not alone. Don’t run from opportunities to speak; rather, run toward them and employ these simple concepts. If you do, you’ll develop a strong voice that influences the masses.
