GLOBAL LEADERSHIP

Walmart's Global Internal Audit Services "Year Beginning Meeting" held recently at the Sam Walton Development Complex in Bentonville is a testament to the innovative thinking that consistently makes this Fortune 500 company a global leader. The world's number one employer originated in a small town in Northwest Arkansas more than 50 years ago. Now located in 27 countries, Walmart employs 2.2 million associates worldwide in more than 10,000 retail stores.

While their retail presence is impressive, Walmart's community giving demonstrates the company’s commitment to making a positive impact in the areas they serve. In 2011, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave $958.9 million in cash and in-kind contributions around the world. In addition, Walmart associates volunteered more than 1 million hours that resulted in more than $13 million in grants to local nonprofits.

"It was a distinct pleasure presenting ideas and strategies for attaining increased efficiency and achievement to the attendees who hail from around the globe," Paul stated at the conclusion of his keynote presentation. "Thank you for extending me the honor of presenting my message during your 'YBM.' It is evident that Sam Walton's legacy continues in the associates and leadership of the world's largest employer!"

TOURISM JAM SESSION

The Louisiana Travel Promotion Association's "Louisiana Strong—Tourism Jam Session" was a rousing success! Held in partnership with the Louisiana Office of Tourism, the Lt. Governor's Summit on Tourism is LTPA's largest annual educational opportunity.

A private, nonprofit membership trade association, LTPA leads the private sector growth of the Louisiana Tourism Economy. The organization provides marketing and educational opportunities, and serves as the advocate, resource and voice for the tourism industry.

The annual Summit provides tourism professionals the opportunity to network, review legislation pertinent to the tourism industry, hone their communications and sales techniques, and discuss marketing strategies for promoting Louisiana's beauty and benefits. Lieutenant Governor Jay Dardenne presented a State of the Industry address, outlining ways that collective efforts are moving Louisiana forward in the world marketplace.

At the close of the Summit, Paul had this to say, "I thoroughly enjoyed presenting 'Sell With Confidence—Unlock Your Potential' to the tourism professionals gathered in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Once again, the hospitality was outstanding. Thanks to all of my friends in Louisiana...new and old. It was a privilege to work with you again!"

DIFFERENCE MAKERS

Various organizations have been born from the simple desire to help someone in need...a bright idea shared with others in a manner that infuses them with the fire to make a difference in the world.

Two such organizations are universally known for improving the quality of life through health and education: United Way and March of Dimes. Paul recently had the privilege to work with both of these esteemed nonprofits.

Best practices and emerging trends were the centerpoint of the "Bright Ideas for Success Conference" hosted by the United Way of Smith County's Nonprofit Development Center in Tyler, Texas. Paul was honored to present "Energize the Enthusiasm...that Exists Within" to the nonprofit professionals gathered for a day of learning and networking.

Paul shared the following thoughts after the dynamic gathering, "Working with the nonprofit professionals in attendance as they collaborated and shared best practices highlighted the importance of acting together for the common good. Thank you to the United Way of Smith County and all of the selfless individuals who dedicate themselves to making a lasting impact in the lives of others!"

Realizing that volunteers are the lifeblood of any nonprofit organization, the March of Dimes hosted a Volunteer Leadership Conference in Little Rock on the 131st birthday of its founder, Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Celebrating its 75th anniversary, the March of Dimes was founded as a non-partisan association of health scientists and volunteers. In 2012, more than 7 million volunteers participated in March for Babies nationwide and raised $108 million to fund lifesaving research and community programs. The conference encouraged collaboration, perpetuated activism for a worthy cause and cast excitement for the organization in 2013.

Janalyn & Amy with Paul

"It was a humbling experience working with the March of Dimes as they continue charting their path of improving the health of babies, preventing birth defects, premature births, and infant mortality," said Paul. "Congratulations on 75 years of making a huge difference in the lives of so many!"

Know Your Nation

Ohio

Ohio is home to pioneers in many fields. One of the areas in which Ohioans have blazed new trails is spaceflight. According to NASA, 24 astronauts are Ohio natives, with another ten astronauts calling the Buckeye State home at one point in their lives. Some of the most notable Ohio astronauts include:

Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon as part of the Apollo 11 mission.

John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth in 1962.

Jim Lovell participated in four spaceflight missions, the most notable being Apollo 13 which suffered an explosion while on the way to the moon but was brought back safely to Earth.

Judith Resnick was selected for NASA’s astronaut program in 1978 and participated in the first voyage of the Space Shuttle Discovery.

Facts worth noting:

• Ohio is the seventh most populous state in our country with 11.5 million residents.

• More of our country's presidents come from Ohio than from any other state. Eight of 44 American presidents were elected from the Buckeye State, earning Ohio the nickname "the Mother of Presidents."

~William N. Clarke

"If you have made mistakes, even serious mistakes, there is always another chance for you. And supposing you have tried and failed again and again, you may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing that we call 'failure' is not the falling down, but the staying down."

BEST Champions in Healthcare

Recently, Paul had the honor of presenting “Energize the Enthusiasm…that Exists Within” during Baptist Health’s 2013 BEST Champion Orientation. Reinforcing the organization’s mission to provide quality patient-centered services, promote and protect the voluntary not-for-profit healthcare system, provide quality health education, and respond to the changing needs of the citizens of Arkansas with Christian compassion and personal concern, BEST Champions serve as a liaison between leadership, unit/department leadership, and staff. Nominated by their peers, BEST Champions are instrumental in embodying Baptist Health’s vision and the special emphasis it places on the values of service, honesty, respect, stewardship, and performance.

Baptist Health's Jake Eisele
and Julie Allison with Paul

“Having the opportunity to work alongside individuals whose purpose it is to serve the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of patients from life’s beginning to its end was truly amazing,” Paul noted after his presentation. “The impact these individuals have on others is without a doubt life-changing. Thank you for the many ways each of you are Champions for a better life!”

A Positive Attitude Stays the Course

The latest entry from Paul's blog...Over the past several years, I’ve had the opportunity to personally work with many members of various weight loss organizations. Through these relationships, I have been given an insider’s view of many ongoing struggles that challenge individuals who constantly work to reach and maintain a healthy weight.

As everyone knows, weight loss is about much more than just eating less and exercising more. How a person approaches one of the United States’ most significant health problems for both adults and children goes much deeper. For anyone with an eye on weight loss, it usually comes down to one question: Am I motivated to stay the course?

Sometimes, in order to become fully motivated, it helps to look beyond ourselves to those we care about the most: our children. In recent years, health officials have become increasingly alarmed by the rapid increase in obesity among children between the ages of 6–19. Those in this age group considered obese or at risk of becoming overweight have now reached 38%, placing an unprecedented burden on children’s health. Given that an estimated 80% of overweight adolescents continue to be obese in adulthood, the implications of childhood obesity on the nation’s health is huge. The importance of getting obesity under control can’t be overstated. So, where do we each begin? (more)
