ADVOCATES IN ACTION

The New Mexico Crime Victims Reparation Commission recently invited Paul to present the closing session during its 17th Advocacy in Action Conference in Albuquerque.

Consisting of advocates, social workers, child and adult protection professionals, attorneys, counselors and law enforcement, the conference attendees share a passion for providing services and a brighter tomorrow to victims of crime.

"Paul provided an incredible closing presentation at our conference that was motivating, heartwarming and left everyone thinking we can all be catalysts for change in our own lives as well as at work," stated Commission staff member Robin Brassie.

The New Mexico Crime Victims Reparation Commission was formed in 1981 under the Crime Victims Reparation Act to assist victims of violent crime with expenses incurred as a result of their victimization.

Upon returning to Little Rock, Paul shared the following sentiments, "Working with the exceptional professionals in New Mexico dedicated to providing services to crime victims was an honor. I thoroughly enjoyed sharing a message of encouragement with the advocates and professionals serving others so diligently."

PURCHASE POWER

State procurement officials perform necessary functions that keep the public sector operating by utilizing goods and services that ensure best value, provide customer satisfaction, and support socioeconomic and environmental goals while providing specific operational services.

Paul recently had the pleasure of working with two outstanding organizations responsible for safeguarding purchase power on state and national levels.

NASPO Members Brenda Willard & Ken Paulson

The National Association of State Procurement Officials, Inc. (NASPO) was established on January 29, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois. A non-profit association dedicated to strengthening the procurement community through education, research, and communication, NASPO is made up of the directors of the central purchasing offices in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and the territories of the United States. Thus far in 2012, Paul has presented sessions during the Midwestern and Eastern Regional meetings. He is looking forward to working with the Southern Region membership during their October conference in Oklahoma.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Operational Services Division recently hosted the 2012 MASSbuys Annual EXPO. Designed exclusively for Commonwealth Statewide Contractors and individuals in public procurement, this once a year event provided exhibitors and attendees the opportunity to engage and network with others in public procurement and the supplier community.

The products exposition afforded an opportunity to discover the latest products and services available to governmental purchasers, while the educational component of the event covered the latest procurement topics, best practices, resources and skills for improving job performance. Paul thoroughly enjoyed presenting “Inspired Teamwork and Leadership” to the record crowd of attendees at the DCU center in Worcester.

Alabama

On December 14, 1819, Alabama became the 22nd state of the Union. The 1820 Federal Census counted a population of 144,317.

Alabama does not have an official nickname. It is commonly referred to as "the Heart of Dixie," a phrase that has appeared on state automobile license plates since the 1950s.

In 2002 the phrase, "Stars Fell on Alabama" began to appear, referring to the night of November 12, 1833, when a fantastic meteor shower seen across the Southeast caused this event to be known as "the night stars fell on Alabama." The meteor shower created such great excitement across the state that it became a part of Alabama folklore and for years was used to date events. A century later it inspired a song and book.

Facts worth noting:

• On September 14, 1969 Talladega Speedway opened with its first running of the 500, won by Richard Brickhouse in front of a crowd of 65,000.

• Mercedes-Benz completed its first North American automobile assembly plant in Vance in 1996, creating more than 1,500 jobs.

• Birmingham native Condoleezza Rice was appointed National Security Advisor to President George W. Bush in 2001. She is the first woman to occupy that postion.
